“You’ll Get Hurt”

My family and I were visiting my parents in Arizona over the holidays. We were at a park when I heard a father yelling at his child, “You are going to get hurt.”

I thought to myself, “That is not a good thing to put into a child’s mind.”

I understand the need as a parent to protect our children, but we need to also watch the statements that we say to our kids. Focusing on what we want for our children and communicating from that perspective will help us get what we want, and also program positive beliefs.

Instead of “You are going to get hurt.” we can say things like, “Be careful.”

It is also not what we say, it is how we say it. If we are coming from fear, the energy of that fear goes into our words and our children feel it. So it is just as important for us as parents to make sure we are focused on what we want instead of focusing on all the things that could go wrong.
